Before we go into describing the content of the Alexander McQueen spring collection, here’s something of what happened afterward: Emmanuelle Alt, editor of French Vogue, first backstage—ahead of a 200-strong throng of congratulators—went down on her knees and pawed the ground in front of Sarah Burton, laughing, “Thank you!” In the background, an army of English interns jumped around and hugged another; a publicist briefed everyone, “She even had some of those ruffles hand-massaged, you realize!”; and Burton, who was losing her voice, croaked to journalists, “It’s all about Gaia, the wonder of nature, the sea.” Behind her, dresses constructed of encrustations of beading and mother-of-pearl, rivulets of microscopic pleats, filigrees of leather, cascades of ruffles, and miles of lace were painstakingly peeled off models by a phalanx of dressers.

For pre-fall, he solved the belt conundrum by simply attaching them to the coats. And what coats they were, particularly the charcoal felted flannel with a crisscross lapel that buckled, harness-like, and the cleanly cut, pony-hair balmacaan in a black-and-white oil-splattered pattern that was inspired by Richard Avedon’s landmark work, In the American West. Kors’s other major influence was the spectacular Ann Bonfoey Taylor exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum (he and LePere traveled all the way to Arizona just to take in the show). The result was a collection that fused a cowboy sense of romance with Taylor’s equestrian chic: a long ruffle skirt with a cutaway hem in a graphic check, devoré silk dresses in turquoise and crimson, the most delicate peasant top in Chantilly lace.

Meriter Volunteer Part I

Thank you to everyone who attended yesterday's Meriter Event! It was a fun and productive sewing and cutting day:)

Special thanks to TASA's Community Service Director, Krisa Kuffel for organizing the event with her outstanding team Kelly McCamley, Rachael Snedigar, Kayla Rossa and Lauren Hood :)

To anyone not familiar with the Meriter Bereavement Project, it's a project created to sew unique infant bereavement gowns, through a partnership between the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Program at Madison’s Meriter Hospital, and the School of Human Ecology.  

Every year, the Textile and Apparel Student Association members dedicate hours of their time on the project to create gowns to fit micro-preemie, preemie, and term infants. 

***Human Ecology former lecturers Anna Stevens and Marian Lichtenwalner created the designs for the gowns back in 2001. Students then produced a prototype packet of patterns in multiple sizes, along with an educational video and other resources, as part of a service-learning course.  The prototype was further developed into the final package for distribution to other hospitals with the help of a Beckner Outreach Grant from the School. 

If you haven't already, please come and help us finish with the embellishments for the baby clothes next Sunday! It will be some time well spent with your fellow TASA members while helping out the Meriter Hospital.

SAINT LAURENT, Chanel, Dior: the names of the most famous Paris houses sort of dance off the tongue. Their histories defeat the idea that younger generations might be bored with old things. And a stream of books and films helps to assure that they won’t be.

“Dior Couture” (Rizzoli), by the photographer Patrick Demarchelier, is far and away the most gorgeous book on the house, established by Christian Dior shortly after the end of World War II. It’s not a complete record; Mr. Demarchelier, working closely with Dior, shows roughly 150 dresses, suits and coats, all of them made in the Dior ateliers from 1947 to 2011, and preserved in the archives. Obviously that’s a fraction of Dior’s output.

A sound track of tinkling bells heralded the first looks at Calvin Klein, ringing in a collection of exquisite delicacy.

In Francisco Costa’s hands, everything was as light and fragile as thistledown, the palette an ethereal blend of face-powder pinks, ice blues, and mauves, and pale vanilla yellows like Jazz Age lingerie. In fact, many of the dresses resembled lingerie of the type that Daisy Buchanan might have worn, including elaborately cut little slip dresses to the mid-calf (or ankle) worn over simple brassiere tops that tied around the body like the 1930s innovations of Charles James. Wide, fluid cut culottes seemed a more controversial proposition for the modern woman, but brought even the concept of a pant into the ultra-feminine realm.

Every fashion designer, they say, is an architect manque, intent on imposing a structure on the wayward human form. That observation seemed especially apt in a season of spring runway shows filled with dresses constructed to glide over the body and embellished to echo the linear symmetry of Art Deco design.

Frida Giannini of Gucci was but one in a handful of influential fashion makers to embrace the hedonistic spirit of the Jazz Age, releasing on her catwalk in Milan a succession of free-spirited flapper dresses emblazoned with the outlines of the Chrysler Building and other Deco monuments. “I like the architectural shapes,” Ms. Giannini said, “especially the New York skyscrapers of the period.”
