Calvin Klein Collection - Spring 2012 RTW

Calvin Klein Collection - Spring 2012 RTW
A sound track of tinkling bells heralded the first looks at Calvin Klein, ringing in a collection of exquisite delicacy.

In Francisco Costa’s hands, everything was as light and fragile as thistledown, the palette an ethereal blend of face-powder pinks, ice blues, and mauves, and pale vanilla yellows like Jazz Age lingerie. In fact, many of the dresses resembled lingerie of the type that Daisy Buchanan might have worn, including elaborately cut little slip dresses to the mid-calf (or ankle) worn over simple brassiere tops that tied around the body like the 1930s innovations of Charles James. Wide, fluid cut culottes seemed a more controversial proposition for the modern woman, but brought even the concept of a pant into the ultra-feminine realm.

Why Deco Now?

Why Deco Now?
Every fashion designer, they say, is an architect manque, intent on imposing a structure on the wayward human form. That observation seemed especially apt in a season of spring runway shows filled with dresses constructed to glide over the body and embellished to echo the linear symmetry of Art Deco design.

Frida Giannini of Gucci was but one in a handful of influential fashion makers to embrace the hedonistic spirit of the Jazz Age, releasing on her catwalk in Milan a succession of free-spirited flapper dresses emblazoned with the outlines of the Chrysler Building and other Deco monuments. “I like the architectural shapes,” Ms. Giannini said, “especially the New York skyscrapers of the period.”

Fashion News: Bloggers

Can You Trust the Editorial Integrity of Personal Style Blogs? A Closer Look at How Bloggers Make Money

by Hayley Phalen

Power bloggers with Dolce & Gabbana | Source: Harpers Bazaar

Once the provenance of earnest fashion fans on the fringes of the industry, blogs have evolved into legitimate media sources and, more importantly, big moneymakers. Just look at today’s WWD story highlighting “hot fashion bloggers” like Bryan Boy and Susie Bubble. The feature goes on to detail how each notable blogger makes their money, how many monthly page views their sites get, and presents an important question: “Bloggers sitting front row have become commonplace—as have partnerships with leading brands and fashion houses that often blur the nature of what they do: Reportage and criticism or marketing and promotion?”

Whether it’s by partnering with brands, styling shoots, receiving payment (or free product) for writing posts or getting commission on the sale of items they post about, some bloggers are seriously cashing in on their influence. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with making money. These bloggers work hard, are dedicated to their followers and add a unique voice to the fashion dialogue. “Bloggers produce original content; they have a unique talent [whether it be photographing, styling, writing] and it’s obvious,” says Karen Robinovitz, co-founder and chief creative office of Digital Brand Architects, an agency that reps “top tier bloggers.” “Why would you, for instance, hire any stylist when you can hire just as talented a stylist but one that also has 75,000 followers?”

But as blogs make the transition from personal style diaries to profit-turning businesses, some readers have begun to feel that original and unbiased content, once the keystone of what made blogs so relevant, has taken a hit.

more on Versace for H&M

Versace: What's the bright idea?

Luxury brands have never seemed further from reach, but Versace's shrewd link-up with H&M delivers glamorous fashion at a budget price--Susannah Frankel

"Iconic pieces for young people – the essence of Versace" is how Donatella Versace describes her collection for H&M, which previewed in London yesterday and goes on sale online and in H&M stores worldwide at 9am next Thursday. Expect camping on pavements, queuing around the block and sharpened elbows when this, perhaps the finest designer offering from the Swedish high-street giant to date, drops.

H&M's link-ups with some of fashion's biggest names began in a blaze of publicity in 2004 with Karl Lagerfeld – and that sold out in a matter of hours. Its creator – who starred in the accompanying advertising campaign – has since said the experience was responsible for making him a household name.
In fact, Ms Versace, who is already among the most famous faces in the industry, was originally approached by the powers that be at the chain two years ago. At that point, the designer was concentrating, she said, on her own business, which was in the throes of restructuring following the 2008 crash, so she turned it down.

"I wanted to stabilise the main collection everywhere in the world," she told Women's Wear Daily earlier this week. Now though, with sales at Versace on the rise and its business and profile growing as a result not least of young British designer Christopher Kane's reinvention of the younger Versus line, the company has finally taken the plunge – and it couldn't be more timely.
