Project Lodge! by Jordan Bautista

"Last week I went to the Project Lodge to find some awesome furniture, because someone had mentioned to me that they were selling some that week. That individual was wrong, but found something fashion-marvelous! I just thought I would share my experience with you :)"

Located at 817 E. Johnson St, The Project Lodge is a unique space dedicated to the arts in Madison Wisconsin. "In the days to come, when other people tell me there's just no place in town quite like the Project Lodge, I will know what they mean." - Josh Wimmer, for The Isthmus

So I  guess the day I went, the Project Lodge was set-up as a wonderful vintage clothing haven :) Check out the wonderful items they had!

Milan fashion week: Dolce and Gabbana call an end to D&G
D&G's closure remains a baffling decision as Prada unveils a collection that is definitely not 1950s and definitely not America
 By Jess Cartner-Morley
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, Milan fashion week's kings of bling, can make anything look glamorous – even the usually rather downbeat business of closing a 26-year-old fashion label.

Thursday's D&G catwalk show, right, was as ever a carnival parade of bouncy, youthful glamour. D&G is the younger sister label to Dolce & Gabbana, and the D&G aesthetic has always appeared to be aimed at a woman with the taste of a cheerleader and the bank balance of a CEO.

An illuminated chequerboard of silk scarf prints lit up the backdrop to the catwalk, so that the models high-stepping to hectic remixes of Prince and James Brown appeared like crazed, colourful brides walking down the aisle of a cathedral to fashion.
But, minutes after the designers took their smiling catwalk bow, and just as the audience filed out into the Milanese sunshine, a statement appeared in the inboxes of the show attendees informing them that Dolce and Gabbana are shutting the cheaper D&G label in order to concentrate on their main collection.

New York City & Fashion Instistute of Technology According to Jenna Mayers

TASA catches up with TAD student Jenna Mayers, who is attending her senior year in NYC at the Fashion Institute of Technology!

[left to right: Maggie Welsh, Kelly Jensen, Jenna Mayers, actress Sophia Bush, Stacey Solo and Jacqueline Rudzinski]

"A couple of the more recent pictures were from Fashions Night Out. Basically that night we went to Macy's and saw a handful of notable people doing events there. Then, we went to a small gallery/show of a designer that Emily Gruca works for. After that we went to BCBGmaxazaria where we saw Sophia Bush and were able to take a picture with here. Other then that we just walked around different shopping areas, some places had snacks or DJ's and what not. There are a TON of Fashions Night Out events so you just have to decide on where you want to go and be willing to wait in line for certain things. (2 girls went to meet the Victoria's Secret models and waited in line for hours)."

"School is good. I am in the Accessory Design program and honestly it hasn't been very rigorous so far. A lot of what we are currently working on are either things we did in Madison, or similar to things that we have done. However, I except that to change a lot once classes get into full swing. That being said, I really like all of my professors and am really excited to learn all about making shoes, working with leather, ect."

Daphne Guiness's Provocative Collection
By Ray A. Smith

Daphne Guinness didn’t just bring her luggage on a recent trip to New York. She brought her closet.

Actually, part of her enviable closet. Ms. Guinness has lent some of her designer couture clothing collection – and a number of towering heels – to the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York for an exhibition entitled “Daphne Guinness.” FIT says the exhibition, which opened on Friday, is one of the few times it has devoted an exhibition to a woman of style rather than a designer.

“I do believe she is the most individual, inspiring fashion icon in the world today,” said Valerie Steele, chief curator at the museum, at a press preview held Friday morning.

The exhibition was two years in the making and Ms. Steele recalled having fun going through Ms. Guinness’s many closets. Ms. Guinness collects clothing from uncompromising, provocative, artistic-minded designers such as her good belated friend Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaia and Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel as well as cutting-edge garments from young designers as if they are works of art. Indeed a good argument can be made that these clothes are true works of art. Ms. Guinness treats them as such, but that doesn’t mean they sit in her closets like artifacts. She wears the clothes, which most people, Lady Gaga excluded, would have difficulty pulling off, as naturally as the average person would wear jeans and a t-shirt. She’s never had a wardrobe malfunction or looked uncomfortable in even the most avant-garde couture.

Student Feature: Danielle Leja

"This summer, I attended the Arts of Fashion Foundation Summer Masterclass in Paris, France (http://arts-of-fashion.org/). Our class was held in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs which is in the Louvre! Through this program, I had many AMAZING opportunities! I will put them in list form for easier reading.
1. I got to visit Les Ateliers Lognon (http://www.lesateliersgerardlognon.com/) which is one of the oldest pleating houses in the world. They do literally every pleat imaginable and work for many of the high end fashion designers as well as students and anyone else looking for intricately pleated fabrics. While we were at the atelier, we were able to see Monsieur Lognon pleat a fabric used in the Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall 2011 Show which took place 1 week after our visit (see photo)! Each student was also able to have fabrics pleated by him to use in our projects (see pleated fabric on my gray dress). It was amazing!

2. I was able to visit the actual work studio of Yves Saint Laurent and they had it set up almost exactly like he left it, with fabrics, sketches, and half-made garments on display! We got to look through the YSL archives as well (all of his sketches), which was incredible; they filled up an entire room! Oh, and we also got to see an exhibition of 70ish YSL looks!

3. I attended the pre-opening of the Hussein Chalayan (husseinchalayan.com) exhibit at the Louvre, and while we were there, the designer himself showed up! (Yes, I did stalk him around a bit...haha) On a side note, our final exhibition took place in a room that was overlooked by the Chalayan exhibit so it was almost like we were part of his show!

4. We went to the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac shop (http://jc-de-castelbajac.com/) where we got to actually speak to him. He gave us insider information to the future plans for his company and offered us some pretty great industry advice as well!

5. I got to go to a party hosted by Rick Owens (http://rickowens.eu/). It was the most amazing and crazy party I have ever been too! Models, designers, photographers, and hopefuls (like me!) were there! Oh, and Rick Owens was there (obviously)!!

6. On one weekend, we took a trip to nearby Arnhem, Netherlands and Antwerp, Belgium. In Arnhem, we went to the Mode Biennale which was basically a whole bunch of fashion exhibits all over the city! In Antwerp, we also saw a couple exhibitions and we also went to the shops of the Antwerp 6!

7. I saw the Madame Gres exhibit, where all of her amazing pleating was on display! If you are interested in pleated dresses, you should definitely look her up.

8. We took a trip to LeSage (http://www.lesage-paris.com/), which is a very old company that does the hand embroidery of all the biggest, most well-known couture designers! It was fantastic. I was able to handle fabrics that were embroidered over 100 years ago and we got to see the embroiderers at work, sewing things that will be coming out in couture collections very soon! We also got to see the stock rooms which contain over 80,000 kinds of bead and thread (every possible combination you can imagine!).

9. We learned how to use a real person to make a bust form! Our job was to go out on the street and each bring back a boy to wrap in plastic and tape! That was an adventure in itself! :) I found a nice Dutch boy (see picture).

10. We went to Versailles for a show which displayed modern couture garments influenced by the 18th century!

11. In class, I was able to work with upcoming designers Jasper Sinchai-Chaprajong, Lucille Puton, and Christine Phung. Through them, I also met many other people who are new to the industry and did some networking! I also met 11 other young designers like myself and created some lasting friendships!

12. We received two illustration lessons from illustrator Aurore de la Morinerie, who has illustrated for huge designers like Chanel!

13. My work was on display in the Musee in the Louvre in Paris, and will also be on display in San Francisco at the end of October.

14. And of course, I got to explore Paris!
I know there are more things we did that I can't even remember right now because I am too excited to even write anymore! I had a hard time choosing pictures to send so I didn't choose any from the trips (I took almost 2000)! It was an incredible summer. If anyone wants more information about the program, feel free to contact me at danielle_leja@fitnyc.edu. I know I probably sound really corny but the trip was really unbelievable and I would like to help anyone out who might be interested in going in the future!"

Is Digital Killing the Luxury Brand? The democratizing power of the Web means figuring out how to go online without going downscale

High-end fashion brands have a problem. Let’s call it the “Kreayshawn quandary,” after the young Bay Area rapper made famous by the Internet and her hit song “Gucci, Gucci,” which has gotten over 16 million views on YouTube. Sample lyrics: “Gucci, Gucci, Louis, Louis, Fendi, Fendi, Prada...the basic bitches wear that shit so I don’t even bother.”
It may have taken a rapper to say it best, but the message has been clear for a while: Luxury designers are losing their cachet. And the problem is only being intensified by the medium that made Kreayshawn a star.

Just a few years back, most high-end fashion brands distrusted all things digital. Their fear was understandable. Digital is democratizing; it’s about accessibility. The brand image for high-end fashion is all about inaccessibility: Keep the masses out so that the people who can afford to buy their way in feel they’re exceptional.

Then those haute couture designers who’d shunned new media took some hits—thanks to the recession—from price-slashing department stores and discount websites, at the same time they began paying attention to changing retail statistics. And an industry obsessed with being ahead of the curve realized it was dramatically behind.

“A couple of years ago, we were in Italy, and we met with [Donatella] Versace and [an executive at] Armani…and they were like, ‘Digital, whatever,’” remembers the CEO of an agency that deals with several luxe brands. “Now it’s, ‘How can I do it?’ There’s been almost a cataclysmic shift.”

"This summer I was an apparel design intern for the 212 Collection at Kohl's Corporate Headquarters in Menomonee Falls, WI. The 212 collection is a new career-wear brand for middle-aged women. Throughout the ten-week internship I worked closely with my manager to complete my impact project, which was to design eight garments for the super hot market for summer 2012. Overall, the internship was an incredible learning experience. Not only did I learn about the 212 collection, but I also learned about Kohl’s, the fashion industry, and design-specific skills.

If any of you are interested in interning at Kohl's, I would encourage you to do so. Jerry O'Brien can help you get started with the application process, and you can always contact me if you have any questions."

What did you do all summer?!?

Meghan Herman

"This summer I went back home to my native land Houston, TX. I loved being back home even though it was extremely hot. We set a record of triple digits degrees for 30 days straight! At the beginning of the summer I went to Canyon Lake with my family it is located exactly between Austin and San Antonio it was so gorgeous and peaceful! I also took a long weekend trip up to Milwaukee to attend Summerfest which I heard so much about. I got to reuinte with some of my Madison friends and see Jason Aldean, a very cute cowboy, live in Concert. Love him! Other than that I worked all summer at Charming Charlie's, I got to learn a lot about fashion merchandizing, styling, and customer service. It was a great opportunity to work with accessories which I of course am in love with! It was a very relaxing summer and I enjoyed every minute of it, but I missed Madison and ready to get back into the swing of things especially with TAD! :)"

Krisa Kuffel

"This summer I mostly worked everyday. On the few days I had off I usually went up north Wisconsin to do some boating and bonfires. I also managed to meet up with a few friends from home and just relax and hang out.

As far as fashion goes, I sewed a couple of new purses this summer for family friends and did a lot of sewing repairs for others. Overall it was a successful and fun summer!"

Rachael Martin

"This summer I had planned to lay back, relax, and enjoy the sun. One bulk email, two dozen pattern pieces, and three phone calls later though I found myself interning in women's accessories design for Lands' End! Thankfully I was able to find a woman who works there and she had an open room for the summer. So for the next 12 weeks I was trained in Adobe Illustrator and IPLM by day, and taught the ins and outs of Greek cuisine by night. It was an amazing experience!"

Nicole Moyer

"I spent 5 weeks of my summer studying abroad in Florence, Italy (yes, I was there the same time Jersey Shore was and DID see them!)...It was an amazing experience full of adventures, travels, fashion, and my studies.

I traveled to Rome, Venice, Milan (fashion Capitol!), Cinque Terre, Pisa, and a few other places while I was there. My absolute favorite? Wine tasting in Chianti! I took an On-Site painting class while there where we moved to different locations around Florence and painted for 4 hours! I wasn't complaining... :) I absolutely recommend studying abroad...let me know if you have any other questions about it!"

Eden Morrison

"This past summer was so busy and it just flew by so fast! I started my summer by getting a job at Gap in Johnson Creek. I worked there part time doing anything and everything I could to learn as much about the retail side of the fashion business from the ground up. I absolutely love my job there and all the people who I work with. It was such a positive and fun experience! When I wasn't working at Gap, I had also signed up to be the JV dance team coach for my former high school. I did not expect how much work that would take! Again however it was another great experience and a wonderful way to spend my time at home. It also led to the opportunity for me to design and start constructing a dance costume for the varsity team at the school. It was a very fun and challenging project. I wish I had a picture of the final dress, but as of now I only have one of the sketch. In the small amount of free time I had around coaching and working, I spent time catching up with my family and friends. I had a fantastic summer but I am so excited to get back into all of the exciting things for this school year!"

Jordan Bautista
“I spent almost my entire summer in the Philippines for a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship, called the Advanced Filipino Abroad Program or AFAP for short. I attended the Ateneo De Manila University for an 8-week program to learn the language Tagalog. It also involved cultural immersion with local families, non-government organizations, different provinces and more. I spent three weeks with a wonderful foster family and I miss them dearly since I got back to Madison.
All of us 12 AFAP participants also engaged in interviews, debates, research and presentation. For our last presentation, I did mine about the mothers of Payatas in Quezon City--Payatas is one of the biggest dumpsites in the country. The mothers were given livelihood opportunities such as making bags instead of collecting garbage for some cash so they could feed their families. My focus was more about the eco-ethical fashion these mothers are creating, instead of romanticizing the poverty behind their wonderful creations. I had a wonderful experience!”
