A sound track of tinkling bells heralded the first looks at Calvin Klein, ringing in a collection of exquisite delicacy.

In Francisco Costa’s hands, everything was as light and fragile as thistledown, the palette an ethereal blend of face-powder pinks, ice blues, and mauves, and pale vanilla yellows like Jazz Age lingerie. In fact, many of the dresses resembled lingerie of the type that Daisy Buchanan might have worn, including elaborately cut little slip dresses to the mid-calf (or ankle) worn over simple brassiere tops that tied around the body like the 1930s innovations of Charles James. Wide, fluid cut culottes seemed a more controversial proposition for the modern woman, but brought even the concept of a pant into the ultra-feminine realm.
